As enterprises retire legacy tape backup infrastructure, certified tape destruction programs ensure that years of sensitive backup data is securely destroyed and documented.
Enterprise organizations are accelerating the retirement of magnetic tape backup infrastructure as cloud backup and disk-based solutions become more cost-effective. This retirement wave is generating enormous volumes of LTO, DLT, DAT, and other tape formats that contain years of sensitive backup data — customer records, financial files, healthcare information, and employee data — that must be destroyed securely before the tapes are physically recycled.
The most effective tape destruction programs combine degaussing with physical shredding and provide serialized certificates documenting the specific tape volumes (by cartridge count or weight), media types, and destruction methods. Degaussing alone may not be sufficient for the highest-security requirements — NIST 800-88 recommends physical destruction for media classified at Secret or above — and physical shredding alone (without prior degaussing) is effective but leaves a theoretical recovery risk from large shred particles. The combination of both methods provides the strongest assurance of irreversibility.
For large-volume tape destruction projects — legacy data center cleanouts, backup infrastructure retirements, acquisition integrations — STS Recycling provides project-based tape destruction services with dedicated logistics and consolidated documentation. We work with your data governance team to ensure that destruction timing aligns with your retention policies and that certificates of destruction match your inventory records.
