The environmental impact of e-waste is global in scale and deeply inequitable in distribution. In the United States, certified recyclers ensure that much of the hazardous material in discarded electronics is managed responsibly. But a significant fraction of global e-waste is exported to developing countries in Africa and Asia, where informal recycling operations recover valuable metals by burning circuit boards openly — releasing dioxins, furans, lead oxide fumes, cadmium vapor, and particulate matter. Studies of soil, water, and blood near informal e-waste sites in Ghana and China have found contamination levels orders of magnitude above safe limits.
In the United States, improperly landfilled electronics leach lead, cadmium, and other heavy metals into groundwater. A single CRT computer monitor contains four to eight pounds of lead. While U.S. landfills are engineered to reduce leachate, they are not perfect barriers, and legacy electronics in landfills represent persistent heavy metal contamination sources for decades.
