The Dos and Don'ts of Electronics Recycling: A Comprehensive Guide

DO choose a certified recycler (R2 or e-Stewards) who can provide verifiable downstream documentation. DO require a certificate of data destruction listing each device by make, model, and serial number before any device leaves your facility. DO retain certificates of recycling and data destruction for at least three years as compliance documentation. DO ask your recycler specifically where materials go — which smelters, refiners, and processors receive each material stream.

DON'T place electronics in regular trash or recycling bins — they contain hazardous materials prohibited from landfill disposal in many jurisdictions. DON'T assume a factory reset secures your data — factory resets leave data recoverable with forensic tools. DON'T use an uncertified recycler who cannot show you a valid R2 or e-Stewards certificate number verified with the certifying body. DON'T accept a certificate that doesn't list specific device serial numbers — generic certificates provide no real documentation value.

DON'T export or donate non-working electronics internationally without verifying the recipient can legally and actually repair them for reuse — illegal export under the guise of donation is a real enforcement risk.
