Safe handling and transportation of spent fluorescent lamps is as important as the recycling process itself. A lamp that breaks during storage or transit releases mercury vapor into the immediate environment, potentially exposing workers, contaminating a vehicle, or triggering a spill response. Proper packaging is the primary defense against breakage and is required under Universal Waste regulations — not just a best practice.
Containers must be closed, structurally sound, compatible with lamp contents, and free of leaks or damage. Commercially manufactured UN-rated fiberboard boxes designed for fluorescent tubes — with internal baffles or foam inserts that prevent tube-to-tube contact — are the most appropriate choice. During transport, Universal Waste lamps are not subject to DOT hazardous materials shipping rules, which simplifies logistics considerably. Containers must still be secured against tipping or crushing.
