How to Properly Store Fluorescent Lamps Before Recycling

Proper storage of spent fluorescent lamps is one of the most frequently misunderstood aspects of the Universal Waste program. Under Illinois rules, spent lamps must be stored in containers that are closed, structurally sound, compatible with lamp contents, and free of leaks or damage. Containers must be clearly labeled 'Universal Waste — Lamps,' 'Waste Lamps,' or 'Used Lamps' and must bear the accumulation start date — the date the first lamp was placed in that container.

Commercially manufactured UN-rated fiberboard boxes designed for fluorescent lamps are the most appropriate storage container. Internal dividers prevent tube-to-tube contact, reducing breakage risk significantly. Plastic trash bags, damaged cardboard, and improvised containers are not acceptable.
